Fun Summer Activities to do with Your Dog

Summer is such an exciting time for your entire family to bond with your dog. Everyone wants to be outside more in the summer, and that includes our furry friends! If you're tired of the same ole trip to the dog park, here are a few fun activities to do with your dog, to mix it up and keep things interesting for everyone.

1. Take Your Dog Camping. If you love the outdoors, include your pet! Camping trips, whether it be to the Ozarks or even just in the backyard, are a fun way to include your dog in a mini vacation. Do some research first, to find the right campground with enough space to allow your pet to explore, without wondering over to someone else's site. Also, make sure to bring lots and lots (and we mean lots!) of water for those peak summer nights that are very hot.

2. Have a Picnic in the Park. No time for a camping trip? Stay local and take your dog with you on your next outdoor picnic adventure. Bring the whole family to a local park and grill out. Make sure to pack a frisbee to throw to your dog. As always, keep your pet leashed with water close in range.

3. Throw a Pool Party. It should be noted that some dogs (like humans) love swimming in pools more than others. But the summertime pool party is a great way to introduce a new exercising option for a willing pup. Ditto for the lake or ocean (keep mindful of local laws regarding allowing your pet to swim in public swimming holes).

4. Go on a New Hiking Adventure. Again, this might require a small trip to the Ozarks, but hiking is a great way to spend time with your dog in the summer. I used to do this with my parents dog all the time. Walking around the neighborhood is one thing, but hiking is a big adventure to a dog. Allow your dog to enjoy all the stops to smell all the wonders of nature. Before planning your hiking adventure with your dog, make sure it's not too hot to safely take the journey into the woods.

5. Take Advantage of the Yard or Amenities. If you're fortunate to have a backyard, it's a great place to safely run and play with your dog in the summer. Even if you rent an apartment, there's usually a green space where you can play with your dog. There are plenty of fun, interactive outdoor-specific dog toys that you can use to keep your dog entertained while you host a cookout, or just a few family members.

6. Enjoy Dog Friendly Outdoor Spaces. Plenty of breweries, restaurants and other outdoor spaces are welcoming of dogs these days. Baseball teams almost always have a"bring your dog to the park" night at least once during the summer. Just remember to know your dog's personality. I've had anxious dogs in the past who would probably not enjoy being in a crowded, public space. But for the more chill dogs, this is a wonderful way for you to enjoy your normal activities while not having to keep your pup home alone.
